The Sensorial Nexus


Your instincts are being trained by machines that learned you first. The last private territory was never your opinions. It was your attention, and it is already under new management


We are trying to cross a terrain that has changed faster than the tools we use to read it. Reason, language, identity, tradition, and the idea of a life organised as a coherent story were shaped within modernity, a world that expected truth to hold still, categories to retain authority, and the self to develop as a recognisable project over time. Postmodernity pulled those expectations apart. Artificial intelligence is now reworking the aftermath. We continue to rely on the instruments of the modern mind, analysis, critique, fixed identities, rational explanation, while navigating an environment increasingly organised by automation, prediction, and ambient computation. We are moving through liquid terrain with equipment built for solid ground.

I call it the Sensorial Nexus: the lived condition that emerges when symbolic mediation, technological infrastructure, and algorithmic prediction converge at the level of perception.

The Sensorial Nexus describes an environment in which technology increasingly shapes what becomes salient before deliberate thought begins. It influences what attracts attention, what feels urgent, what appears desirable, what seems threatening, what is ignored, and what calls for response. Its reach extends past belief and opinion into the pre-reflective orientation through which the world first becomes meaningful to us.

After Postmodernity

We are living in the aftermath of postmodernity. Its historical work was the dismantling of foundations, inherited narratives, and claims to stable meaning. Tradition, progress, reason, identity, and truth became objects of suspicion, and meaning came to appear contingent, symbolic, reversible. Negation was its central operation, and negation needs something to negate. Little remains standing.

Cultural periods end when they cease to provide an adequate account of the present. Postmodern suspicion has settled into common sense. Incredulity towards grand narratives, once a provocation, now forms part of the cultural background.

The space left by weakened structures of shared meaning fills quickly. Technical systems occupy it. Platforms organise visibility, search engines organise relevance, recommendation systems organise discovery, metrics organise value, feeds organise attention. Artificial intelligence participates in memory, interpretation, judgement, and decision. Where shared narratives once supplied orientation, technical systems supply procedure. We ask the interface what comes next. This arrangement allows action to continue even where meaning remains unsettled: a society can stay highly functional while becoming less able to explain why it moves in one direction rather than another. The Sensorial Nexus begins to emerge when that management reaches perception itself.

The Saturated Nervous System

Speed was once externalised in machines and infrastructure. In the mechanical age, the machine stood in front of the body and changed what the body could do. The machine now operates through us, and perception, communication, labour, memory, and responsiveness are reorganised around continuous technical mediation.

Two domains have come apart. The digital domain of circulation, networks, platforms, feeds, images, signals, can expand indefinitely. The biological capacity to process it remains organic. Attention and memory are bound to the nervous system and cannot be accelerated without cost. When the rate of production exceeds the capacity for absorption, experience saturates. Meaning can fail through overload: there comes a point at which the difficulty is no longer uncertainty over what something means, because there is too much to process for meaning to stabilise at all. Attention fragments, memory is externalised, the interval between stimulus and reaction contracts.

Contemporary exhaustion is revealing here. Burnout, attention fragmentation, and permanent availability are often experienced as personal failures, yet they reflect an environment organised around continuous activation. The prevailing pressure has changed its grammar. Earlier forms of power worked through prohibition, an external you must not. The present regime works through positivity, an internalised you can: more productivity, more visibility, more connection, more optimisation. Pressure arrives as self-pressure, and failure is lived as personal inadequacy. The subject becomes worker and supervisor at once, consuming its own capacities as fuel for its own projects, and calling the resulting fatigue freedom. The old architecture of surveillance depended on the possibility of being watched from a tower. The digital environment adds a further layer: we monitor ourselves, counting followers, reactions, streaks, ratings, response times, sleep cycles, and engagement. The gaze has become infrastructural, and its power lies largely in its usefulness.

From Tools to Dependency

Under saturation, technology appears as compensation. We cannot process everything, so systems filter; we cannot remember everything, so systems store; we cannot evaluate every option, so systems rank. The arrangement is extraordinarily useful. It also changes where human competence is located.

Consider navigation. A person who relies on turn-by-turn directions every day may gradually cease to build internal spatial maps. Remove the system and competence can collapse at once. Intelligence has not declined; the cognitive task has been reorganised. The same holds for memory. A generation ago people routinely memorised telephone numbers. Today many remember where information can be retrieved rather than the information itself, and memory increasingly consists of access paths: which device, which application, which keyword will return what is needed.

A well-known argument in the philosophy of mind holds that cognition can extend beyond the biological brain when external resources become reliably integrated into ongoing mental activity. Its famous illustration is a man who stores what he needs in a notebook and consults it as another person consults biological memory. The notebook becomes part of the working system through which he acts, and removing it impairs him in the way removing internal memory would. The contemporary equivalent travels in every pocket. The smartphone observes context, anticipates need, and responds immediately, and the boundary between personal competence and technical infrastructure becomes progressively harder to draw.

This dependence carries a moral dimension. When an external resource functions as part of someone’s cognitive life, blocking access to it may resemble impairment more than inconvenience. And what about when the technical component enters the body? brain-computer interfaces, electrode arrays, and deep brain stimulation each realise a person’s capacities through a coupled biological-technical system. Yet this coupling is older than any modern device. Human evolution is inseparable from the exteriorisation of memory, skill, and cognition into tools and material supports. Humans have always been a technical animal. What changes now is the depth of the integration and the kinds of capacities being exteriorised. Earlier prostheses extended bodily force. Contemporary systems extend memory, attention, judgement, prediction, and perception.

The Transhuman Turn

Transhumanism is often imagined through spectacular images: neural implants, artificial organs, augmented bodies. The more current transition is silent instead. The threshold begins when human capacities become so deeply coupled with technical systems that withdrawal of those systems produces a serious loss of agency. Maps, calendars, search, recommendation, wearables, and AI assistants already participate in cognition at different levels, and the trajectory runs from external tool to continuous support, from continuous support to dependency, from dependency towards integration.

Enhancement acquires a compensatory meaning under these conditions. The attraction extends past surpassing the human: technology promises to keep the human functional within environments that exceed biological tolerance, offering faster filtering, more reliable memory, and steadier attention. The enhanced human begins to appear as a response to a world already organised beyond the capacities of the unenhanced one.

The Sensorial Nexus

The Sensorial Nexus is the condition in which technological systems participate in determining what becomes perceptually and emotionally salient before deliberate reflection begins. It concerns pre-reflective orientation: the level of experience at which something first appears important, attractive, threatening, familiar, urgent, or irrelevant. Something catches the eye; a place feels uncomfortable; a topic suddenly feels pressing. Reflection may follow, but selection has already occurred. Attention has moved, and the world has already been filtered into what matters and what recedes.

The Sensorial Nexus describes the growing ability of infrastructures to act on that earlier moment. Recommendation systems determine what appears next. Metrics attach visible value to people, ideas, and events. Trending mechanisms manufacture collective urgency, notifications replace one perceptual field with another, and predictive feeds learn which sequences of stimuli best sustain attention. Artificial intelligence intensifies the process because it can interpret, generate, personalise, and anticipate. The environment begins to respond to the individual while shaping the individual who responds.

Human perception has never been neutral. We encounter the world through habits, expectations, memory, embodiment, language, and culture. The Sensorial Nexus intensifies, personalises, automates, and continuously recalibrates a mediation that was always there. The contemporary individual inhabits an environment that learns.

The Engineered Generalised Other

A classical account in social psychology holds that the self emerges socially. We learn to see ourselves through the attitudes of others, internalising expectations, roles, norms, and the standpoint of the wider community, the generalised other. Within the self there is a tension between what is sometimes called the Me, the organised set of social attitudes we have absorbed, and the I, the live response to that organisation, the source of initiative, deviation, and refusal. The Me gives stability and social legibility. The I introduces the possibility of an act that could never be fully predicted, and it becomes visible only after it has happened. That gap is where freedom is felt.

The distinction is important to keep in mind, especially under algorithmic conditions, because the generalised other can now be engineered. The contemporary person still encounters social expectation through family, institutions, and face-to-face life, but also through platforms that stream a quantified social world continuously into experience: likes, ratings, rankings, trends, read receipts, and performance indicators. The attitudes of others arrive as data. The generalised other becomes measurable, ambient, continuously updated, and algorithmically curated, and this changes the social material from which the me is formed.

When algorithmic systems continuously organise attention and anticipate response, they begin to shape the field in which the I must emerge. Some objects are made visible while others disappear; some emotional responses are amplified through repetition and timing; some options are placed directly in the path of attention while others never enter experience at all. The space for spontaneous response remains, but its conditions are increasingly pre-arranged.

When Private Experience Arrives Pre-Shaped

Subjectivity remains private in a basic sense. Nobody else can inhabit my pain, memory, or mood, and the immediacy of experience stays first-person. Yet private access is one thing and independent formation another. A feeling can belong entirely to me while the conditions that produced it were engineered. A desire can feel spontaneous after years of repeated exposure. Anxiety can feel intimate while being amplified by an environment designed to hold attention, and a judgement can feel self-generated while the field of available evidence was curated in advance.

This is what makes the Sensorial Nexus difficult to perceive: its effects are experienced as interior. The technological environment enters the formation of private experience without abolishing its privacy. The world arrives filtered, ranked, timed, and emotionally coloured. The individual still responds, interprets, refuses, improvises, and surprises. The interval in which those responses emerge is under pressure.

The Automation of Instinct

Throughout my work I use instinct in a broad sense: embodied, pre-reflective orientation, the capacity to encounter the world before experience has been translated into explicit reasoning. Instinct in this sense develops through exposure. It is shaped by risk, uncertainty, consequences, resistance, failure, physical environments, other people, and the unpredictability of events.

The Sensorial Nexus alters that relation. Orientation is increasingly supplied through cues: the route is recommended, the next object of attention is selected, the socially rewarded response is made visible, the mood of the crowd is quantified, the uncertain environment is interpreted in advance. Instinct begins to resemble social reflex. The body still responds, yet the signals organising the response are external, pre-programmed, and optimised. This is what I mean by the automation of instinct. Its endpoint would require no machine to command any action. A more efficient arrangement is available: organise the perceptual environment so thoroughly that predictable responses emerge while still being experienced as spontaneous. The subject chooses. The system has participated in determining what appeared worth choosing.

Postmodern accounts kept symbolic instability at the level of representation, where meanings proliferated and irony and critique remained available as forms of distance. The Sensorial Nexus installs mediation earlier, at the level of attention, salience, and affect, before reflection gains traction. What is endangered is the practical capacity for first-person endorsement: the ability to recalibrate attention, affect, and orientation, to interrupt what has been presented, and occasionally to refuse it.

Preserving the Interval

The concern here is different from any fantasy of escaping technology. Human beings have always been socially formed, technically mediated, and environmentally dependent; there is no pure autonomous self waiting behind the screen. The task is to preserve the interval in which response can exceed prediction, the space in which the I can still answer the Me rather than being overwhelmed by an engineered generalised other.

That may require attentional calibration: periods of reduced stimulation, direct exposure to environments that resist immediate interpretation, boredom, physical practice, unmediated conversation, solitude, risk, embodied skill, and the willingness to remain temporarily without an answer. None of these practices restore an imaginary pre-technological human being. They may preserve forms of friction that prevent the perceptual field from being organised entirely in advance.

The struggle of the coming years may therefore concern something prior to privacy, misinformation, or screen time. It may concern the ownership of salience. Who decides what appears? Who determines what interrupts? Who shapes what feels urgent before deliberation begins? Who trains the reflexes through which the world becomes meaningful? The Sensorial Nexus is already forming around us, and its power lies partly in the fact that it rarely feels like power. It feels like convenience, relevance, personalisation, assistance. Eventually, perhaps, it begins to feel like instinct itself.
