Instinct was dismissed as primitive. Artificial intelligence now outpaces us in many formal operations once treated as the summit of intelligence, while the Sensorial Nexus trains perception before judgement begins
Previously, I introduced the Sensorial Nexus: the condition that emerges when symbolic saturation, technological infrastructure, and algorithmic prediction converge at the level of perception itself. I argued that these systems increasingly shape what becomes visible, urgent, attractive, threatening, or irrelevant before deliberate thought begins. They direct attention, recruit affect, and arrange salience. By the time reason enters the scene, the direction of travel may already have been chosen. This development intensifies a much older problem.
Modern Western thought placed reason above instinct. Rationality became the mark of human maturity, while instinct was pushed downwards, towards animality, impulse, error, and the residue of an earlier stage of development. Knowledge became associated with concepts, propositions, classifications, and explanations. A trustworthy judgement was expected to show its workings.
That hierarchy was always unstable. I use instinct as a broad term for the orientation that precedes deliberation: an embodied and pre-reflective openness towards the world, a mode of attunement that precedes abstraction and makes reflection possible.
Instinct is reason’s forgotten twin.
It has always supplied the initial organisation of salience, timing, and relevance through which reason can operate. Modern rationalism obscured this dependence by treating instinct as an unreliable residue rather than a condition of judgement. Artificial intelligence has exposed the consequences of a neglect that long preceded it.
Machines increasingly perform calculation, retrieval, classification, comparison, prediction, and formal analysis with speed and scale beyond ordinary human capacity. A civilisation that defined intelligence primarily through such operations now finds its favoured abilities replicated and exceeded by technical systems.
Trying to compete through more calculation leads us further into the machinery. The urgency comes from the Sensorial Nexus. The same systems that outperform us in formal operations are beginning to shape the pre-reflective capacities through which we might orient ourselves differently. Instinct always belonged beside reason. Now it must be recovered before it is rewritten as reflex.
The Hierarchy that Buried Instinct
A major strand of modern epistemology treated knowledge as conceptual. The mind represents, classifies, compares, and judges. To know something is to understand that it is thus and so, placing the particular beneath a general category and expressing the result through propositions.
This model has immense value. Science, law, public argument, and moral justification depend upon knowledge that can be stated, examined, challenged, and revised. Its dominance, however, created a distorted picture of judgement. Human beings rarely encounter the world as a neutral collection of facts waiting for conscious interpretation. Experience arrives already structured. Some details command attention, while others recede. Certain possibilities appear attractive, disturbing, familiar, or dangerous before we can explain why.
Reason enters this organised field. It can test, correct, refine, and redirect. Yet the first orientation has already occurred. The contemporary environment makes this sequence easier to see because it compresses the time available for reflection. Platforms accelerate attention. Recommendation systems narrow possibilities. Predictive systems anticipate response. Emotional cues spread faster than reasons can be integrated into a settled judgement.
Deliberation increasingly functions as commentary on a movement already underway. This temporal pressure reveals something rationalism obscured: judgement requires a form of orientation capable of operating before full articulation.
Three connected ideas help recover this neglected territory. The first concerns the limits of analysis when experience is still moving. The second concerns the role of habit, passion, and sentiment in action and belief. The third concerns forms of knowledge that remain tacit and embodied. Together, they provide a basis for restoring instinct to its rightful place.
Knowing Movement from Within
There are two broad ways of approaching experience. One moves around its object. It examines, compares, describes, and translates what it encounters into symbols and familiar concepts. This is analysis. The other attempts to enter the movement of the object itself. This is intuition.
Analysis produces knowledge through perspective and representation. Intuition seeks coincidence with what is singular and temporal in the thing encountered. Intuition here means a disciplined effort to remain with a phenomenon as it unfolds. It grasps movement from within rather than reconstructing it afterwards through fixed elements. Consider a melody. A melody is experienced as a flowing whole. Each note carries the residue of those that came before it and prepares the arrival of those that follow. The listener encounters continuity, tension, rhythm, and development.
Analysis can divide the melody into pitch, interval, tempo, duration, and structure. These descriptions are useful. They give us a representation of the music. The lived melody exceeds that representation. Its notes interpenetrate. Their meaning lies in the movement they form together. Separating them into isolated units changes the object being examined. This lived continuity can be called duration.
Duration is time as experienced from within. The past remains active in the present, while the present leans towards what is coming. Memory, sensation, anticipation, and mood flow through one another. Clock time divides experience into equivalent units. Duration carries qualitative difference. The same tension appears when we hear several strokes of a bell. At first, they may form a single rhythmic impression. Later, attention separates and counts them. The original experience was a qualitative whole. Analysis reconstructs it as a sequence. Modern systems are built around reconstruction.
They divide behaviour into clicks, pauses, views, purchases, locations, response times, and predicted preferences. Lived movement becomes a trail of measurable events. The model can achieve impressive predictive accuracy while losing the continuity of the experience from which those events emerged. This limitation grows more consequential when the representation is returned to the individual. Systems study behavioural traces, infer patterns, and use those inferences to organise future experience.
The representation begins to shape the movement it originally described. Analysis gains precision by arresting movement. Intuition stays close to becoming, preserving what is temporal, singular, and resistant to decomposition. Intuition’s importance long predates artificial intelligence, but the Sensorial Nexus gives it renewed urgency because contemporary systems translate movement into data and feed those translations back into perception. Restoring instinct therefore involves recovering contact with duration: the capacity to remain with experience before it hardens into categories, predictions, and externally supplied interpretations.
The Force that Moves Us
Reason compares ideas, establishes relations, corrects false assumptions, and identifies effective means. Its activity begins within a field of concern already shaped by attraction, aversion, desire, and habit. A person must already care about an outcome before reasoning can help to achieve it.
The map cannot generate the destination. Human action requires an orientation towards the world that reasoning cannot produce through its own operations.
Reason can show that a chosen strategy will fail. It can reveal that an object of desire does not exist or that another route would be more effective. The original significance of the goal comes from elsewhere. The same structure appears in moral judgement. Imagine witnessing a person being publicly humiliated. The event can be described in exhaustive detail. We can record the words, tone, location, timing, intention, and visible reaction. None of these observable features contains moral wrongness as a detachable property. The moral dimension becomes visible through responsiveness.
Discomfort, indignation, sympathy, or disapproval allows the event to appear as morally charged. Affective orientation brings its significance into view. Reason enters afterwards. It can assess whether the response is proportionate, whether the facts have been understood correctly, and whether the judgement can be defended. The first perception of significance depends upon a sensibility that deliberation did not generate. Moral salience precedes moral argument. Habit extends this insight across ordinary life.
Human beings expect the future to resemble the past because repeated experience trains anticipation. Logical demonstration cannot prove that a familiar pattern will continue. Custom carries the mind from what has happened towards what is likely to happen next. Habit is the quiet architecture of practical existence. It allows us to move through familiar spaces, recognise voices, reach for objects, anticipate consequences, and respond within time. Every action would become paralysing if it required complete rational demonstration. Belief also depends upon a felt quality. An idea believed carries weight, steadiness, and authority. An idea imagined lacks the same practical force. Reason can examine a belief. The sense through which it first appears credible arises from habit, sentiment, and experience.
Repetition produces familiarity, and familiarity acquires authority. Visibility begins to resemble importance, while engagement starts to resemble value. The systems controlling exposure gain influence over the expectations through which later reasoning takes place. Habit was once formed largely through sustained contact with physical environments, practices, institutions, and communities. It now develops within platforms designed to predict attention and reinforce response. The algorithm enters the training ground of belief. Reason needs an affective and habitual orientation in order to function. The cultivation of that orientation can support judgement or deform it. The Sensorial Nexus captures the formation of habit itself.
The Knowledge We Cannot State
Another limit appears in the gap between what we know and what we can explain. Skilled action makes this visible. A cyclist maintains balance without calculating each movement. A doctor may recognise that a patient looks seriously unwell before identifying the decisive sign. A craftsperson can sense resistance in a material. A musician can hear that a performance lacks coherence before reducing the judgement to explicit criteria. Such knowledge can be exact. Its precision lives in performance, perception, and embodied discrimination. This is tacit knowledge. Tacit knowing has a directional structure. We rely upon many subsidiary details while attending towards a meaningful whole.
Consider recognising a familiar face in a crowd. You do not usually inspect the distance between the eyes, the shape of the mouth, the angle of the cheekbones, and the texture of the skin before reaching a conclusion. These particulars support recognition while remaining outside focal awareness. Attention moves from the features towards the person. When we force the particulars into the centre of attention, recognition can weaken. The meaningful whole fragments. The same applies to skill. A pianist who focuses suddenly on the exact movement of every finger may lose the flow of the piece. Performance depends upon an integration absorbed through practice. The details function together because they have become subsidiary to the musical act. The breakdown of this integration can be called destructive analysis.
Destructive analysis isolates measurable components and mistakes them for the skill itself. The explanation may be accurate in each separate detail while failing to grasp the organisation that allowed those details to function together. A piano produces sound through keys, hammers, strings, force, and velocity. These physical facts matter. They cannot exhaust the difference between mechanical execution and virtuosity. Touch, timing, bodily coordination, and perceptual responsiveness form an integrated whole.
Excessive scrutiny can impair the performance it seeks to clarify. This places a limit upon the dream of complete formalisation. Rules, instructions, theories, and models guide action because someone knows how to apply them. Application depends upon context, judgement, and tacit discrimination. Every explicit system rests upon a background that cannot be made fully explicit.
A complete theory still requires interpretation. A formal rule still requires judgement. A model must still be connected to the world it represents. Even identifying the object comes first. Before constructing a mathematical theory of a frog, we must already recognise the frog as a meaningful whole. Tacit knowledge supplies the ground on which formalisation stands. The rationalist hierarchy obscured this dependence by treating explicit knowledge as complete and tacit orientation as an imperfect residue. Explicit knowledge grows out of tacit knowing and remains dependent upon it.
The Machine on Reason’s Throne
Artificial intelligence increasingly performs many of the operations modernity associated with superior intelligence. It retrieves information, compares possibilities, detects patterns, classifies objects, produces arguments, predicts outcomes, generates language, and organises vast quantities of symbolic material. These systems scale formal representation. They operate across volumes and speeds that exceed ordinary human deliberation. Their achievements are considerable. Their emergence also reveals the weakness of defining human judgement through formal reasoning alone.
If intelligence consists primarily of classification, calculation, retrieval, and prediction, the machine has entered the privileged domain once reserved for reason. A response based on competing through faster analysis accepts the hierarchy that created the problem. The human contribution lies partly in the forms of orientation that hierarchy neglected: lived duration, affective salience, habituated judgement, embodied skill, tacit integration, responsibility, and first-person engagement with situations that remain open. They form the conditions under which reason can operate. The machine’s rise exposes how much value instinct held all along.
The danger appears when AI systems are treated as models of judgement itself. Their outputs can reproduce the visible form of a decision while lacking the lived orientation through which decisions acquire responsibility and meaning. Institutions may still prefer the output because it is consistent, measurable, rapid, and defensible through procedure. Human judgement then begins to adapt around the model. People anticipate the metric, satisfy the classification, defer to the ranking, and organise conduct around prediction. Representation starts training the reality it was built to describe. Tacit orientation becomes recoded as noise, bias, opacity, or inefficiency. What cannot be formalised becomes difficult to defend. What cannot be measured risks disappearance. As embodied orientation weakens, people turn more frequently towards systems promising certainty. Continued reliance leaves fewer opportunities to cultivate the capacities that would support independent judgement.
A dependency loop takes shape. Permanent availability shifts more judgement towards the machine and gradually erodes the human capacities that once carried it.
Instinct Under the Sensorial Nexus
The Sensorial Nexus names the condition in which salience, relevance, and affective readiness are increasingly pre-arranged by external systems operating at the level of perception. Its significance reaches beyond the superiority of machines in formal reasoning. The danger concerns their ability to enter the formation of instinct itself. Instinct is a cultivated orientation shaped by experience, uncertainty, resistance, memory, social life, and contact with consequence. Embodied openness is compressed into reflex and synchronised with algorithmic cues. Attention turns towards what is presented. Desire forms around repetition. Judgement enters a field whose priorities have already been arranged.
The response still feels private, while its conditions become increasingly external. Recovery requires cultivation, correction, exposure, and refinement. Impulse alone cannot carry the weight of judgement. Instinct supplies orientation, while reason examines and corrects it. Restoration therefore means re-establishing the partnership that rationalism obscured.
Restoring Instinct to Its Rightful Place
Critical thinking alone is insufficient. It often arrives after attention has been captured, affect recruited, and relevance assigned. The orienting background itself requires recalibration. We need intervals in which continuous cueing is suspended, familiar patterns loosen, and perception can reorganise around direct experience. This is where the DIEM Method enters my argument.
The method draws upon anthropological accounts of ritual and rites of passage, particularly the movement through detachment, liminality, and reintegration. These stages offer a structure for interrupting the Sensorial Nexus. Detachment loosens the grip of continuous signals and familiar patterns. Liminality opens a threshold in which established orientations can remain suspended long enough for alternatives to emerge. Reintegration returns the individual to ordinary life with a recalibrated relation to attention, judgement, and action.
The goal is recovery within mediation. Contemporary life offers no untouched territory outside technological systems, and purity belongs to fantasy. What remains possible is the deliberate creation of intervals. Within such intervals, habit can be disrupted, tacit integrations can reform, and intuition can encounter experience before prediction translates it into a prompt. The recovery of instinct has become urgent because the systems that displaced it conceptually are now learning to reproduce, anticipate, and manage its outward signs. The struggle therefore concerns more than preserving reason from machines. It concerns preserving the embodied ground that tells reason where to look, what deserves attention, and when action must begin.
Reason has always depended upon instinct, and instinct has always belonged within judgement.
The future of judgement may depend upon remembering both before the Sensorial Nexus teaches us to forget them.
