Dr Leandro Loriga was awarded the 2025 MUNI Scientist Award by Masaryk University, Faculty of Medicine, during the official ceremony held at CEITEC MU in Brno, in recognition of his book Body Integrity Dysphoria and the Ethical Dilemma of On-Demand Amputation (Springer Nature). The award acknowledges his sustained contribution to the study of Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID) and his role in shaping contemporary ethical and anthropological debates on bodily autonomy, embodiment, and medical decision-making.
The book addresses BID as a rare and still poorly understood condition marked by profound estrangement from one’s own body, examining its implications beyond clinical description to include ethical responsibility, disability, identity, and the limits of therapeutic intervention. Drawing on extensive field research with medical professionals and interdisciplinary analysis in bioethics and medical anthropology, Dr Loriga’s work has contributed to establishing him as a leading scholarly voice on BID and related questions of bodily autonomy within contemporary medical ethics.
